Milan (Italian: Milano; Western Lombard: Milan is the second largest city of Italy, located in the plains of Lombardy. It is the capital in the Province of Milan, as well as the regional capital of Lombardy. The municipality (Comune di Milano) has a population of 1.3 million, while its urban area is about 4.5 million. The Milan metropolitan area is the largest in Italy, with a population of 7.4 million.

Milan is renowned as one of the world capitals of design and fashion. The English word millinery, referring to women's hats, is derived from the name of the city. The Lombard metropolis is famous for its fashion houses and shops (such as along via Montenapoleone) and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in the Piazza Duomo (reputed to be the world's oldest shopping mall). The city hosted the World Exposition in 1906 and will host the Universal Expo in 2015. Inhabitants of Milan are referred to as "Milanese" (Italian: Milanesi or informally Meneghini or Ambrosiani).

From Wikipedia

[ The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a covered double arcade formed of two glass-vaulted arcades at right angles intersecting in an octagon; it is prominently sited on the northern side of the Piazza del Duomo in Milan, and connects to the Piazza della Scala. Named after Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of united Italy, it was originally designed in 1861 and built by Giuseppe Mengoni between 1865 and 1877.

The street is covered over by an arching glass and cast iron roof, a popular design for nineteenth-century arcades, such as the Burlington Arcade, London, which was the prototype for larger glazed shopping arcades, beginning with the Saint-Hubert Gallery in Brussels (opened 1847) and the Passazh in St Petersburg, (opened 1848) and including the Galleria Umberto in Naples (opened 1890).

The central octagonal space is topped with a glass dome. The Milanese Galleria was larger in scale than its predecessors and was an important step in the evolution of the modern glazed and enclosed shopping mall, of which it was the direct progenitor. It has inspired the use of the term galleria for many other shopping arcades and malls ] From Wikipedia

Castello Sforzesco (English: Sforza Castle) is a castle in Milan, Italy that now houses several of the city's museum and art gallery collections.

The original construction on the site began in the 14th century. In 1450, Francesco Sforza began reconstruction of the castle, and it was further modified by later generations.

After the unification of Italy in the 19th century, the restoration of the castle was started following its transfer from military use to the city of Milan. The restoration work was directed by Luca Beltrami. The central Filarete tower above the main city entrance was rebuilt between 1900 and 1905 as a monument to King Umberto I.

The castle was severely damaged as a result of the allied bombardment of Milan in 1943 during World War II. The post-war reconstruction of the building for museum purposes was undertaken by the BBPR architectural partnership. From Wikipedia

[ If you like your fish fresh, then the Marsaxlokk Fish Market is going to really tickle your fancy.  Malta’s foremost fishing village, Marsaxlokk has seen fishermen sailing in and out of its bay since time immemorial.  The daily catch is taken to be sold at the fish market in Valletta although on Sundays the catch is retailed by the fishermen themselves at the Marsaxlokk Fish Market.

In this picturesque locality amidst the charming quayside houses and fresh sea air you can wander through stalls laden with all types of fish that were coursing through the depths of the Mediterranean only a few hours previously.  Depending on the season, such fish include bass, grouper, dentex, stone fish, white bream, red mullet, tuna, swordfish, and the famous lampuki or dolphin fish in late autumn.  Octopus and squid are also frequently available to make mouth-watering soups or pasta sauces. ] From: 101Malta

[ As cities go, Valletta is one of Europe’s most famous. Built over 500 years ago it is often described as a city ‘built by gentlemen, for gentlemen’ and has recently been made a World Heritage Site signifying its cultural importance. When you walk into the city expect an explosion of activity, color, noise and confusion.
Apart from being Malta’s capital, Valletta is also the commercial and political center and is filled with hundreds of shops as well as a vast daily market. For the more discerning visitor there is plenty of history and culture to get your teeth stuck into.
Valletta is teeming with museums, galleries, palaces and other places of extreme interest – most of which are very much worth visiting. But, more importantly than all of that, it is the people who make Valletta a truly beautiful place to visit.]

[ Hypogeum or Hypogaeum (plural hypogea) literally means "underground", from Greek hypo (under) and gaia (earth). It usually refers to an underground, pre-Christian temple or a tomb. When Christian underground shrines, crypts and tombs that would be hypogea if the rites and burials were pagan, are called catacombs, a mistaken discontinuity in sepulture practices is implied that is not borne out by the archeology and history. "Like other ambitious Romans, the bishop-saints of the third and fourth centuries were usually buried in hypogea in the cemeteries outside the walls of their cities; often it was only miracles at their tombs that caused their successors to adopt more up-to-date designs. In Dijon the saint and bishop Benignus (d. c. 274) was buried in a large sarcophagus in a chamber tomb in the Roman cemetery. By the sixth century the tomb had long since fallen into disrepair and was regarded as pagan, even by Bishop Gregory of Langres", Werner Jacobsen has observed.] Wikipedia :Hypoguem

[ Time travel, as we are all too well aware, remains the stuff of science fiction. One day, maybe, but not for now. Sadly that means we will never be able to flick a switch and appear in the middle of a medieval joust armed with a six pack and digital camera. However, in Malta we do have one of the closest things you will ever find to time travel – the ancient city of Mdina.
From the second you step through its imposing gates it will truly feel like you have turned back the clock several hundred years. The narrow streets, fascinating architecture and overall ambience of this stunning place make it one of Malta’s most visited sites. ]
